What is "Privacy Channel"?
Privacy Channel is a media site that surveys the privacy policies and personal information protection policies of websites and applications around you, evaluates them from a privacy perspective, and discloses the results. Privacy Channel is the first media site in Japan to disclose the evaluation of companies that handle data to the general public.
By publishing the Privacy Channel's evaluation of companies' privacy policies, we aim to educate those in charge of privacy protection about the importance and urgency of privacy protection measures and to serve as a reference medium for companies that are revising their privacy policies.
Background of the release of the Privacy Channel
The Amendment of the Act on the Protection of Personal Information, which went into effect last April, and the revised Telecommunications Business Act, which is scheduled to go into effect by June of this year, are among the legal changes underway in Japan aimed at protecting consumers' personal information, and many companies are required to comply with the law. Among these, the development of a privacy policy is of particular interest.

Despite the fact that companies are expected to take these actions, they have yet to do so.
According to the results of the "Questionnaire on Privacy Governance" released by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on October 18, 2021, 73.6% of consumers are highly concerned about privacy protection, and 70.4% are cautious about providing personal information regardless of financial gain or points. Meanwhile, 58.7% of companies believe that they can influence consumer behavior to a small extent by communicating their own privacy initiatives.
This survey shows that "there is a gap in privacy awareness between consumers and companies" and that "privacy is important from the perspective of corporate branding."
